90th Birthday Anniversay of Heydar Aliyev honoured in Geneva

An official reception ceremony dedicated to the 90th Birthday Anniversary  of National Leader of Azerbaijani people Heydar Aliyev was organized in Geneva by Permanent Mission of the Republic of Azerbaijan to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva.

The event was attended by Director-General of UN Office at Geneva Mr. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, President of the Human Rights Council Remigiusz Achilles Henczel, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Anders Johnson, Secretary-General of the International Civil Defence Organisation Nawaf Al -Sleibi, high-level representatives of other international organizations and missions, Azerbaijani students and diaspora members.Opening the ceremony, Ambassador, Permanent Representative Mr. Murad Najafbayli first informed the participants about life and activity of Heydar Aliyev.

He said Heydar Aliyev, who was the chairman of the Supreme Assembly of Nakhchivan, was invited to Baku in 1993 to take power when there was real chaos in the country.

Mr. Najafbayli said that Heydar Aliyev played an indispensable role in strengthening the independence and statehood of Azerbaijan, its economic development, and the country's gaining a worthy place in the international arena.

He went on to say that despite the aggressive policy by Armenia against Azerbaijan and occupation of 20% of the territories of Azerbaijan by Armenian, Azerbaijan was able to achieve stable political system, major economic and social achievements.

Mr. Najafbayli said that Heydar Aliyev `s successful strategy and major projects initiated by him ensured long-term development of Azerbaijan and now President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues the national leader` s political course.

The event participants saw a documentary on the life and activities of national leader Heydar Aliyev.
